This morning was an unfortunate reminder of Florida’s status as the leader in the nation for bicycle deaths per capita.
Abigail Dougherty, 20, was riding her bicycle going southbound on NW 17th St. to cross University Ave. when a garbage truck struck and killed her. It is still unclear who had the right of way and a Traffic Homicide Investigation is currently underway.
Dougherty was less than a week shy of her 21st birthday, an excellent student, and spent her free time working at the UF Food Pantry and instructing yoga at UF Rec Sports. This is a devastating loss for the UF community and our condolences go out to Abigail’s friends and family during this devastating time. Her sudden and tragic death is a sad reminder to be constantly alert while on the road.
