Living in Florida, one of the most popular activities in the heat of the summer, is to go swimming. I thought it would be beneficial to post some safety tips for this favorite summer time activity.
Did you know that Florida leads the nation in drownings of children under the age of five (7.29 per 100,000) as well as children up the age of 14 (2.67 per 100,000)? As a result, the state has been vigorously promoting pool and water safety. If we all do our part, we can help these numbers diminish tremendously by following some safety tips.
Typically, there are a few common scenarios in which children drown: At gatherings with lots of people when we assume someone else is watching the children and/or the pool. Another common scenario is when a supervising adult may leave the vicinity to do something for a moment away from the area (grab a towel, answer the phone, etc.). Finally, unfortunately, there are times when a child gains access to a pool area through an unlocked door, or by unlocking a door themselves that is within reach.
Of course, the solution to these scenarios can be remedied by following these simple tips:
- Appoint an adult or a supervisor at gatherings, so that there is always a “life guard” present at the pool, even when it is not in active use.
- Never step away from the pool, even for a second, when children are in the area.
- Make sure all doors and gates that access the area, have locks high enough that they are out of reach to a child.
Some of the most heart wrenching calls I have received over the years have been from parents who have lost a child in a drowning accident. It is in honor of all of those families, that I urge you to follow some safety guidelines, in order to prevent another tragic loss.
